TikTok wants 9:16. YouTube's main feed wants 16:9. If you're covering both from a single production, you generally have three options: shoot twice, crop one from the other, or capture both formats natively in one take. Here's how to actually run that last option end to end.
Step 1: Plan the shot for both crops before you hit record
Decide where your subject needs to stay for the entire clip — usually centered, with headroom that works for a tighter vertical frame. If you're recording both formats live, you don't need to compromise the landscape framing to protect the vertical one, but it still helps to know where the "shared safe zone" is for anything you don't want cropped out.
Step 2: Record both formats in one session
Use a dual-lens or single-lens multi-format recording app so the portrait and landscape files are generated live, with synced audio, instead of derived afterward. This removes an entire editing pass — there's no keyframing a pan to follow your subject across a crop, because both files were framed on purpose from the start.
Step 3: Trim each file for its platform's pacing, not its shape
The files are already the right aspect ratio — what's left is platform-specific pacing. TikTok rewards a fast hook in the first couple of seconds; a YouTube upload can spend longer on setup. Trim the start of each cut independently rather than assuming the same in-point works for both.
Step 4: Caption and caption-safe each version separately
Vertical platforms overlay captions, usernames, and interaction buttons over the bottom and side of the frame. Add your captions and on-screen text after you know which file is going where, and keep them out of the areas your platform's UI will cover (see our aspect ratio and safe zone guide for exact percentages).
Step 5: Publish natively to each platform
Upload the vertical file directly to TikTok (and Reels/Shorts if you're cross-posting) and the landscape file to YouTube. Native uploads consistently perform better than videos that were originally made for a different platform and re-exported — even subtle letterboxing or resolution mismatches can read as lower effort to both viewers and the algorithm.
